3-1/2" lacquered brass inkwell with a pivoting conical cover over it's ink opening, to prevent spilling during rough seas (quill sold on our "Miscellaneous" page). Ours is a reproduction, but is like one c.1690-1730 example shown in "Early American Antique County Furnishings" by George C Neumann (L-W Book Sales Gas City, IN).
